Bishop Diego’s Spencer Ekola and the doubles team of Matt Hammond and Jose Pacheco advanced to the Frontier League individual tennis finals.
The top-seeded Ekola maintained his perfect season without dropping a game on Tuesday. He beat Max Flores in a pro set 8-0 and topped Villanova’s Fabio Lauretta 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. He will play No. 2 seed Michael Frank of St. Bonaventure for the title on Thursday at Tennis Club of Santa Barbara.
In doubles, Hammond-Pacheco will meet top-seeded Medina-Frager of St. Bonaventure for the title. Hammond-Pacheco defeated McKenzie-Albea of Santa Clara in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-3.
The upset of the day was Bishop’s Straford-Jones and Roberts knocking off fourth-seeded Wilder-Laub 9-8 in the quarterfinals, fighting off two match points at 8-7. Stratford-Jones-Roberts will play No. 2 seed McKenzie/Albea of Santa Clara for third place on Thursday.
