LAS VEGAS, Nev.— After a narrow loss to UNLV on Saturday, UC Santa Barbara (3-12, 2-1) got back on the courts to take on No. 27 Columbia University (8-2). The nationally ranked Lions overwhelmed the Gauchos as Columbia cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Gauchos on Sunday.
Santa Barbara could not win the coveted doubles point as Columbia captured doubles wins on courts No. 1 and 2. The lone doubles win for UCSB came on court 3 as senior, Kiersten Meehan and sophomore, Luisa Ortiz Candido won their second straight doubles match together with the 7-4 victory today.
The singles matches were tough all across the board as the Gauchos could only record one singles victory on the day.
Junior, April Scatliffe faced a major challenge today as she endured a 6-1, 6-0 loss. Freshman, Kaiulani Boyer seeded on court No. 2 once again, faced a tough 6-1, 6-2 defeat. Meehan and juniors, Stacy Yam and Paola Cos also faced tough losses today on courts 3, 4 and 5.
The lone bright spot on the day came from freshman and Noosa, Australia native, Jaimee Gilbertson. The freshman continues to shine on court No. 6 for UCSB as she extended her singles match win streak to seven matches with her 7-6, 7-6 win today.
The Gauchos will now go through finals week on the academic calendar and later host No. 52 Kansas State on Saturday, Mar. 22 at noon. UCSB will stick around home as the team will host Big West conference opponent, Hawaii on Monday, Mar. 24 at 11 a.m., and then host Sacramento State on Wednesday, Mar. 26 at noon.
