SFT: Acosta’s one-hitter lifts SBCC over Hancock

Sophomore Celeste Acosta threw a one-hitter on Thursday and Christal Vierra delivered a two-run double in the sixth to lead SBCC to a 2-0 softball victory over Hancock at Hagerman Field in Santa Maria.

Acosta (7-6) struck out four and walked two. Jessica Rothanzl got the only hit with a two-out double in the fourth. Hancock, ranked No. 8 in Southern Cal, fell to 14-5 and 2-2.

The Vaqueros (9-7, 3-2 WSC Gold) beat one of the top pitchers in the state. Katie Chenault fell to 12-4, despite pitching a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts. She leads the state with 169 strikeouts in 114 innings.

With one out in the sixth, Victoria Lucido singled to right and was out at second on a fielder’s choice by Alice Cen. Danielle de Castro walked and Vierra, a freshman third baseman, drilled a double off the left-field fence to make it 2-0.

The Vaqueros will host Long Beach on Saturday at noon
