PBB: Dons win opener on Grandcolas’ 3-hit shutout

Santa Barbara High ace Gabe Grandcolas pitched a complete-game, three-hitter, leading the Dons to a 2-0 season-opening baseball win at Pioneer Valley in the Central Coast Tournament on Tuesday.

Grandcolas, a senior left-hander, threw only 63 pitches and didn’t walk a batter. He struck out five and got 18 infield groundouts. The defense behind him played errorless baseball.

The Dons scored both runs in the sixth inning. Ian True led off with a single to center, advanced to third on an infield out and a bunt single by Dalton Schroeder. He scored on the front end of a a double steal with Schroeder, who later scored on a wild pitch.

Santa Barbara mustered only four hits on the day.

“The pitcher on their side was throwing strikes,” said assistant coach Mike Cooney.

On Grandcolas; “Gabe was throwing everything,” Cooney said. “The hardest ball they hit was a line drive to third base. All three hits he gave up were bleeders.”
