CIF IN-GAME UPDATES: DONS ARE CIF CHAMPS

PRE-GAME INTRO:  Santa Barbara High is playing for the CIF 3AA Division girls basketball championship against Lake Elsinore-Lakeside at the Felix Events Center on the campus of Azusa Pacific University. Santa Barbara (25-5) is the top-seeded team in the division and Lakeside (23-6) is the No. 2 team. Both teams were knocked out in the semifinals last season. Santa Barbara is the CIF Final for the first time since 1989.

POST-GAME UPDATE:  It finally happened for Andrew Butcher and the respected Santa Barbara High girls basketball program he’s coached for more than 30 years.

The Dons won their first CIF championship.

Getting a 38-point performance from super sophomore Amber Melgoza, terrific leadership and decision making from senior point guard Desirea Coleman and solid and steady play from its role players, top-seeded Santa Barbara ran away from Lake Elsinore-Lakeside, 67-43, in the 3AA Division title game at Azusa Pacific’s Felix Events Center on Saturday.

Santa Barbara getting looks but can’t convert. Dons finally take the lead, a long pass from Jocelin Petatan to Amber Melgoza for a layup. SB leads 5-4, 2:13 left in quarter.

Coleman drives around defender for a layup and an 8-6 Dons lead.

Coleman draws a foul while shooting; makes both FTs, 10-6 Dons at the end of the first quarter
