IRVINE – The No. 16 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos took on No. 8 Loyola Marymount and No. 6 Hawaii on the second day of the UCI tournament.
UCSB started the second day of the UC Irvine tournament with a matchup against No. 8 Loyola Marymount. Both teams had great defense during the first quarter, with LMU only leading 2-0 heading into the second quarter. UCSB outscored the Lions 3-2 in the second, trailing by one after the first half.
The Lions kept the Gauchos to one goal during the second half, leading to their 8-4 win over UCSB. The Gauchos goals came from sophomore Jessie Porter, junior Lauren Martin, freshman Taylor Shore, and freshman Carly Christian.
Coming off their earlier game, the Gauchos faced off against No. 6 Hawaii. UCSB came out strong with two goals from Jessie Porter and one from sophomore Samantha Murphy, leading 3-1 heading into the second quarter. UCSB kept Hawaii to two goals during the second quarter in order to maintain their lead 4-3 after the first half.
Heading into the third quarter, Hawaii was able to score four goals to the Gauchos two, taking their first lead of the game 7-6. With three more goals during the fourth quarter, the Rainbow Wahine ultimately defeated the Gauchos 10-7. UC Santa Barbara ended the UC Irvine Invitational with a 12th place finish.
UC Santa Barbara heads to Thousand Oaks to participate in the Cal Lutheran Invite from Friday, February 28th to Saturday, March 1st. The Gauchos game times and opponents are to be announced.
