UCSB women’s soccer adds nine new recruits

The UC Santa Barbara women’s soccer program has signed nine high school athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2014 season, head coach Paul Stumpf announced Thursday.

“I really feel good about this group,” said Gauchos’ head coach Paul Stumpf. “We think we’ve filled a lot of needs and added some talented depth to a team that already returns a lot of good players.”

Among the top recruits in the nine-player class are Chace Schornstein, a defensive center midfielder/center back from Redwood High School in Mill Valley, Calif.; Amanda Ball, a forward/midfielder from Chino Hills HS in Chino Hills, Calif.; Hannah Frogge, a goalkeeper from Bishop McGuinness High School in Oklahoma City, Okla./ and Brittney McKinney, a foreward/center midfielder from Chaminade Prep in Woodland Hills, Calif.

“I have to give a great deal of credit for this recruiting class to (Assistant Coach) Austin Risenhoover,” Stumpf said. “He worked very hard to identify and pursue these players.”

THE PLAYERS


Chace Schornstein – CMF/D – 5-8 – Redwood HS – Mill Valley, Calif.
Schornstein, a prized defensive center mid and defender…She has outstanding size and uses it to her advantage in a defensive role on the midfield or backline…A three-time All-Marin County Athletic League selection at Redwood HS, she helped the team to the 2013 MCAL Championship…Named Redwood HS’s Defensiver Player of the Year in 2013…Played for Marin FC 1996 Blue Team…Team captain for her club…Also a member of the Cal North 1996 ODP State Team from 2009-2012 and the Regiion IV 1996 Player Pool in 2010 and 2012.

Amanda Ball – F/MF – 5-5 – Chino Hills HS – Chino Hills, Calif.
Ball attends Chino Hills High School where she plays forward and midfield…Helped her high school team to the CIF semifinals and quarterfinals as a sophomore and junior…An outstanding athlete, Ball also runs track and field at Chino Hills.

Hannah Frogge – GK – 5-8 – Bishop McGuinness HS – Oklahona City, Okla.
Frogge likely gives the Gauchos their goalkeeper of the future…Good size and athleticism give her an opportunity for immediate playing time…A First Team All-City and All-District selection…As a senior in 2013 she had eight shutouts in 11 games and a save percentage of 90%…Was the Oklahoma co-leader for shutouts in class 6A in 2012 and the leader as a sophomore in class 5A in 2011…Played for Oklahoma Futbol Club 96 for seven years…Club was ranked first in Oklahoma…Was on the Oklahoma ODP Team in 2010 and 2011, attended ODP Regional Camp in 2010 and 2011…Frogge also helped OFC to the Region III championship in 2013.

Brittney McKinney – F/MF/D – 5-4 – Chaminade Prep – Woodland Hills, Calif.
McKinney helped lead Chaminade Prep to a CIF championship…Is a two-time all-league selection and ranks among her school’s all-tiime top-10 in goals scored…Played for Real SoCal where she helped them to a B Pool, ECNL national championship in 2013.

Zoe Purcell – MF/F – 5-3 – Torrey Pines HS – San Diego, Calif.
Purcell attends Torrey Pines High School where she is, due to injuries, is playing her first year of high school soccer…Played for San Diego Surf Soccer Club…Team captain from 2006-2012…Helped her club to the 2013 U17 Surf Cup Championship…Member of the 1996 Cal South ODP Summer and Winter Pools since 2009.

Kate Shoemaker – D – 5-9 – Poway HS – San Diego, Calif.
Shoemaker is a good, physical defender who will compete for playing time immediately…Was an honorable mention All-Palomar League and helped Poway High School to CIF San Diego Section championship matches…A member of the San Diego Soccer Club which was a National Cup Finalist in 2012.

Remi White – GK – 5-4 – Monte Vista HS – Danville, Calif.
White will be in the mix for playing time in goal for the Gauchos…Helped Monte Vista High School to CIF North Coast Section titles in 2011 and 2012…Monte Vista also advanced to the final in 2013…Competed for the ECNL Mustang Fury from U14-2014…CYSA State Cup championship in 2010…US Youth Soccer ODP 95 Cal North State Pool in 2008…US Club Soccer PDP 95 Nor Cal Region 3 Player Pool 2008.

Jordan Alves – CMF/F – 5-5 – Mary Star of the Sea HS – San Pedro, Calif.
Alves is an attacking center midfielder and forward…A three-time First Team All-Camino Real League selection…Was named First Team All-CIF as a freshman and sophomore…El Camino Real League MVP as a sophomore and team MVP as a junior…Mary Star of the Sea HS won league titles in 2011 and 2012…Played for Fram Soccer Club, the Far West Champions in 2013…Also won Regional Championship in Hawaii in 2013 and a Bronze Medalists at 2013 Nationals…Surf Cup Champs.

Brittney Rogers – GK – 5-7 – Murrieta Valley HS – Murrieta, Calif.
Rogers gives UCSB another option in goal…Played the last two years for Legends FC…Team won Regionals in Hawaii in June of 2013…Won fall and spring leagues each of the last three years…Took second-place at the National Cup in 2013…Previously played for Arsenal ECNL.
