Its recent victory over Santa Barbara High helped vault San Marcos’ girls water polo team to its highest ranking in CIF Division 1.
In the final rankings before next week’s playoffs, the Royals moved into fifth, one spot ahead of Santa Barbara. Dos Pueblos is eighth.
The Royals beat the Dons 6-5 in a fifth-place semifinal game at last weekend’s Southern California Championships in Irvine. The crosstown rivals play the Ventura schools on Tuesday before squaring off in the regular-season finale on Thursday at San Marcos. That meeting figures to be for the Channel League title. The Dons are 6-0 and the Royals 5-1.
