BTen: Freshmen look tough in San Marcos opener

Freshman Kento Perera had an impressive debut for the San Marcos tennis team, sweeping his three sets without losing a game to lead the Royals to an 11-7 non-league win over Santa Ynez on Tuesday.

Daniel Coulson, another freshman, went 2-1 in his first match. In his second set versus PJ Marymee, Coulson saved two set points and was down 1-5 in the tiebreak before winning six points in a row to claim the set.

“Kento and Daniel played amazing today,” San Marcos coach Jarrod Bradley said. “Kento was dominant in every way while Daniel showed perseverance and mental fortitude in his comeback. The team was excited for both of them in their first varsity match today.”

In doubles, seniors Owen Lincoln and Travis Smelley swept their three sets at the No. 1 spot.
