Thursday’s Channel League match between Dos Pueblos and San Marcos was a close one until, during the third quarter, Paige Hauschild scored three times in less than 40 seconds, igniting a 7-0 run that led to a 13-7 final score in favor of the Royals.
“I just feel our team did really well persevering,” Hauschild said. “It was kind of close in the first half and we did really well in the second half to work all together and finish as a team.”
Dos Pueblos, down 5-2 at halftime, came out in the third quarter and trimmed the lead to 5-4 on goals by Whitney Steidl and Jordan Williams. The Chargers drew two ejections and converted both man-up opportunities.
San Marcos’ two star freshmen, Hauschild and Brittany Prentice, combined to score the next five goals to open the score up to 10-4. Halie Johnson and Hauschild scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to create San Marcos’ biggest lead of the game at 12-4.
Playing in just her third Channel League game, Hauschild finished with a game-high four goals – all in the second half. Prentice was San Marcos’ second-leading scorer with three.
“It’s kind of intimidating but I’m starting to adjust to it,” Hauschild said of playing at the high school varsity level.
Dos Pueblos led twice in the first half. Shannon Cleary gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead and Steidl put them in front again at 2-1 with the first goal of the second period. Britten Vilander kept the Chargers in front by blocking a penalty shot in the first quarter.
The Royals managed to take their first lead with 4:47 before halftime.
San Marcos improves to 2-1 in league play while Dos Pueblos falls to 0-2.
