Jessica Gaffney held Mater Dei’s top player without a goal and goalie Sienna Goggia made 13 saves to lead Santa Barbara High’s girls water polo team to an 8-7 victory over the Monarchs on Thursday.
Betsy Hendrix scored goals and Jessie Brummett had three assists to pace the Dons offense against the CIF Division 2 power.
But the defense was the story for Santa Barbara as Gaffney shut down USC-bound Brianna Daboub and Goggia continually frustrated Mater Dei with her play in the cage.
Santa Barbara will stay in Orange County over the weekend to play in the Holiday Cup at Newport Harbor High. The Dons open against Huntington Beach on Friday.
