A solid defensive effort on power plays and great goaltending from Jenna Phreaner led San Marcos to an 8-5 win over Dos Pueblos in a crosstown Channel League girls water polo match on Tuesday.
Phreaner made 13 saves and got help from a defense that continually denied DP in 6-on-5 situations.
“That is truly the mark that kept us in the game,” San Marcos coach Chuckie Roth said.
The Royals were led offensively by freshman Brittany Prentice with three goals.
“Brittany had a great breakout game that we have been really needing. She had a great counterattack goal, one from 2 meters and then another on a 6-on-5 man-up situation. She played a very versatile game today and that really helped us with the win,” said Roth.
Riley Heiduk and Halie Johnson each scored two goals and Paige Hauschild had one. Shannon Cleary scored twice for DP.
San Marcos improves to 12-5 and 4-1 in the Channel League. Dos Pueblos falls to 5-11, 0-3.
