Sophia Soriano scored four goals and Caroline Montgomery and Chloe King each added three, and Cate used its advantage in speed to pull away from Carpinteria, 16-6, in a crosstown girls water polo match on Tuesday at Cate.
King and Montgomery keyed a 10-2 run over a seven-minute stretch between the second and third periods to break the game open.
“Defense was really the star of the day,” Cate coach Nathan Alldredge said. “Lydia Stevens had some choice steals that led to a few nice counter-attack goals from Sophie Maes and Ally Satterfield.”
Cate’s defense forced Carpinteria into mistakes and the Rams (6-1, 3-1 Tri-Valley League) capitalized with their speed.
“We were able to hang in there for a quarter, but we were out-swam most of the day,” Carpinteria coach Bryan Swarm said. “Our bright spot was our goalie Joanna Hipple with 11 saves, two them were 5-meter blocks.”
Allison Wagner score four goals for Carpinteria (4-10, 0-3).
