Sophie Maes scored with eight seconds left in the second overtime period to lift Cate to a 10-9 girls water polo victory over Malibu on Wednesday.
It was the Rams’ first win against the Sharks in eight years. Cate is 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Tri-Valley League.
“It was an incredible team effort for six periods of play, and a great game to watch for all the fans lucky enough to be in attendance,” Cate coach Nathan Alldredge said.
Senior co-captain Caroline Montgomery was all over the pool in the match, scoring four goals, making seven steals, and recording a key blocked shot to lead the Rams.
The outside play of Maes (3 goals) and fellow senior Chloe King (2 goals) kept the hosts off-balance. Goalie Bella Shealy played a solid game, making 12 saves.
Alldredge said the play of the game came with 3:07 left in the third period. Following a blocked shot and chasing the goalie, Cate’s two-meter player Sophia Soriano literally swam the goalie and the ball into the cage, breaking a 6-6 deadlock. Both teams chased goals after that, with Cate scoring first in each of the overtimes and ultimately putting the game away at the wire.
