Joel Serugo prepares to take a shot for Cate during the Rams’ 4-0 win at Laguna Blanca.

Cate took care of business in the first half and defeated Laguna Blanca 4-0 in a Condor League boys soccer match on Wednesday in Hope Ranch.

The Rams did all their scoring in the first half. Geoffrey Acheampong scored in the third minute, picking up up a loose ball in the box and cleanly slotting it to the far post. Tyler Douglas fed Joel Serugo for a 2-0 lead in the 17th minute. Serugo then crossed a ball that Douglas finished for the third goal. Andrew Robbins made it 4-0, taking a feed from Christian Herman and ripping a shot into the roof of the Laguna Blanca goal.

Cate kept the pressure on the Owls, but goalkeeper Mikey Hawker made several outstanding saves to deny several sure goals. The Rams outshot Laguna Blanca 32-5.

“I thought the boys played well,” Laguna Blanca assistant Daniel Torres said. “ We’ve been improving and it showed today against a really good team. Cate played well, but I thought our boys were up to the challenge and played well.”

Laguna created some chances in the second half but Cate goalkeeper Dylan Schwartz was up to the task.

The Owls also got good play from center back Conrad Perry.

“He’s played awesome all season,” Torres said. “He doesn’t shy away from any challenge.”

Cate coach Pete Mack credited Laguna Blanca for playing a good game.

“We were out of sync much of the game,” he said. “Part of that is because Laguna did a good job of keeping lots of bodies behind the ball and rarely allowed us opportunities to attack with numbers up. We had some good combinations and produced some great scoring chances, but we just couldn’t finish them.”

Cate, ranked fourth in CIF Division 6, improves to 6-2-3 and 2-0 in league. Laguna is 4-2-2 and 1-1.
