BBK: Royals shoot blanks in 4th quarter, lose at Buena

San Marcos went cold in the last six minutes and suffered a 41-37 loss at Buena in a Channel League boys basketball game on Friday.

The Bulldogs finished the game on an 11-0 run.

“This game was a carbon copy of our first game at Buena,” San Marcos coach Dave Odell said. “In that game, we only scored one basket in the last seven minutes. I didn’t think it could get any worse ….but it did.”

The loss drops San Marcos to 4-4 in Channel League.

Elijah Johnson scored 17 points to lead San Marcos. The rest of the Royals struggled to score. The next highest point total was six.

“We only had three assists in the entire game. We are at our best when we are sharing the ball; cutting and passing. We didn’t do that tonight,” said Odell

Buena had a balanced attack, led by Taylor Sturgeon’s 14 points.

“Credit Buena,” Odell said. “They seemed to want tow in more than us. They won on the hustle plays, loose balls and rebounds.”

San Marcos is back in action on Monday at first-place and undefeated Santa Barbara.
