WRS: Royals edged at the wire in opener

It was a wild season opener for the San Marcos wrestling team, as the Royals battled Hueneme down to the last match.

Wrestling newcomer Adrian Sanchez of the Royals and Hueneme’s Felipe De La Cruz were all even at 4-4 in the third period when De La Cruz scored a takedown to secure the win the heavyweight bout and give the Vikings a 36-34 team victory.

“It was a great night of wresting and the crowd was just amazing,” San Marcos coach Tony Becerra said. “We are still a young team but we have a lot of promise. I’m looking forward to an enjoyable season as these kids gain experience and confidence through the year.”

Another exciting match was at 132 pounds, where Mark Carroll of the Royals pulled out a 5-4 victory with an escape point in the final seconds.

Joe Alvaro (145) and Honowaii Rodriguez (170) scored pins for San Marcos.
