ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – Westmont Women’s Soccer (17-2-5) couldn’t find the offense needed to win the 2013 NAIA National Championship. The Warriors, seeded at number two, fell to #4 Concordia (21-1-1) by a score of 1-0 in the championship game.
“I am really proud of the players to even be in this game,” said Westmont head coach Kristi Kiely. “We walked into the tournament one game at a time and all of a sudden we were in the championship game. It was exciting to be here and a good experience for our players.”
The winning goal came in the 65th minute off the foot of Hannah Scott. Her strike from the top of the box was deflected across the face of the goal and into the top corner of the net.
The Cavaliers controlled possession for the majority of the game and outshot the Warriors 24-4. Westmont goalkeeper Lindsey Smith produced six saves on the night.
“They kept coming at us and it was hard for us to keep the ball and hard for us to get anything going offensively,” said Kristi. “However, the players never let up, just like every game. It just didn’t go our way this time. It will be hard tonight and the weeks coming up, but we will learn from it and those coming back next year will be able to take that with them.”
In post-game awards, three Warriors were named to the 2013 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship All-Tournament Team – senior defender Alison Hensley, junior midfielder Tiffany Dimaculangan and freshman defender Sophie Fuller.
Fuller was also named the Select Sport America-NAIA Championship Outstanding Defensive Player.
