GVB: Cate swept by No. 1 team in state tourney

With the opportunity to take on the top-seeded team in the South Regional of the CIF Division 4 State Tournament, Cate volleyball players came back from their Thanksgiving break to get the team back together.

The Rams had some good moments but San Diego’s Francis Parker had too much firepower and won the match, 25-12, 25-17, 25-11.

“They were pretty legit,” Cate coach Greg Novak said of the San Diego Section champions. “They were crisp and fast; they were good. We went in with the attitude: ‘We got a nice invite to the state championships, so let’s go after it 120 percent and have fun doing it.”

Novak said freshman middle Delaney Mayfield “did a great job hitting and serving bullets at them.” Brenna Geiger also served tough.

“We had moments of brilliance,” he said.

Novak had nine players for the match. He said a couple of players flew in and another drove from the Bay Area.

“They weren’t going to pass up this opportunity,” he said.

Cate finished the season 16-4.
