WSoc: Gauchos fall in Hawaii on a late goal

WAIPAHU, Hawaii – Forward Tiana Fujimoto scored a goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation to lift the University of Hawaii (6-6 overall, 1-2 in Big West) to a 1-0 win over visiting UCSB (7-6 overall, 1-2 in Big West) on Thursday night.

Fujimoto, who is ranked second in the Big West in goals scored with seven, scored her game-winner on Thursday with an outstanding individual effort. Weaving her way through the Gaucho defense on the left flank, Fujimoto created enough space to send a low liner that bounced off the far post and into the back of the net at the 80:42 mark.

Despite the goal, UCSB goalkeeper Beth Ritter had another solid match with four saves. Offensively, the Gauchos were limited to eight total shots, including three on-goal, two by the team’s leading scorer Madison Beckley.

Santa Barbara will return to the mainland and play at Cal State Northridge on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Gauchos will return home on Friday, Oct. 18 to host UC Riverside in a 7 p.m. match at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.
