Locals run strong at Chicago Marathon

Joy Moats of Santa Barbara ran the Chicago Marathon in 2 hours, 48 minutes.Santa Barbara?s Joy Moats and Ramiro ?Curly? Guillen shined at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon last Sunday.

Moats finished the women?s race in personal best time of ?2 hours, 48 minutes, placing 27th out of 17,391 other female runners who went the distance, according to the marathon website. Moats, 37, ?also finished third in her age group and was the first female from the state of California to finish the course.

Moats ran a smart race, running negative splits throughout the first 20 miles and completing the final 10k in a time of 38:37 to complete the 26.2 mile race through scenic areas of Chicago. The course starts and finishes at Grant Park, but traverses the beautiful and diverse neighborhoods of the Windy City.

Guillen, 31, also ran a personal best for the marathon. He finished ?in 2:27:14 as the 58th runner to cross the line out of 38,869 runners.
