GTen: Carpinteria is too strong from Cate

Carpinteria’s Kelsie Bryant ran her season record to 30-0, leading the Warriors to a 15-3 non-league win over city rival Cate on Friday.

Bryant has lost only two games on the year.

The Warriors went 9-0 in singles, with Odessa Stork and Kassandra Ni turning in solid efforts.

“Odessa had the match of the day with Makenna Madden of Cate and played the best set I have seen I have seen her play,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant. Stork closed out a 7-5 win.

“Both players constructed great points and made minimal mistakes as it was a very high quality set,” said Bryant.

He said Ni “was her usual steady, patient self. She has been frustrating a lot of opponents lately.”

In doubles, the Warrior’s No. 1 team of Natalie Saito/Lesly Zapata swept their three sets in an impressive performance. Makenna Pike/Emily Saito went 2-0.

“We have played our strongest matches against our best opponents so far,” Bryant said. “Cate is a very good team and will get better very soon. They have smart, athletic players and excellent coaches. Their record does not due them justice as they have been without a few players in a few of their losses.”

Carpinteria, the top-ranked team in CIF Division 5, is 10-1 overall.
