In a crazy finish, Cate missed a penalty shot with no time left on the clock in regulation, allowing Carpinteria to pull out an 8-7 boys water polo win on Wednesday.
Down by a goal, Cate drew an ejection with 12 seconds left. The game clock expired but the ejected Carpinteria player took too much time swimming to the penalty box and the officials awarded the Rams a dead-time penalty shot.
Cate missed the shot and the game was over.
“It was very exciting to say the least,” Carpinteria coach Bryan Swarm said. “We were glad to get out of there with the win.”
Forrest Vanstein scored four goals to lead Carpinteria (6-11, 1-3 in the Tri-Valley League). Zack Allen score four goals for Cate (2-5, 0-4).
“There were some periods of great team play mixed up with some lethargic moments, which eventually couldnít get the job done,” said Cate coach Nathan Aldredge.
