WVB: Harris scores 2 more goals, SBCC wins 3-1

SBCC scored three times in a 26-minute stretch of the second half on Friday afternoon and went on to beat Taft 3-1 in its women’s soccer home opener.

The Vaqueros (3-2) are 19-4-4 in the last four years at La Playa Stadium.

Brandie Harris had two goals and an assist, boosting her state-leading total to eight goals in five games. She scored in the 49th and 57th minutes on identical give-and-go passes with Jackie Holmer.

Heather Rivera took a short pass from Harris in the 75th minute and beat the keeper from 10 yards out. One minute later, Cristina Salazar spoiled the shutout by curling in a 26-yard shot into the upper right corner.Holmer, a freshman midfielder from Red Bluff, Calif., didn’t play during a scoreless first half. She started the second half and the Vaqueros were on the board four minutes later.

“They were both nice 1-2 plays,” said Harris, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High. “John (Sisterson, the coach) says for every 10 shots, we should get at least one goal.”

The Vaqueros outshot the Cougars 27-12, including 13-6 in shots on goal.

“We got going early and I thought we deserved a couple of goals early on,” said Sisterson. “Their keeper played very well and kept them in the game.
“We told the girls to go forward and get their shots off. When we compete hard, we get our due rewards.”The Vaqueros will take next week off, then host Canyons in their WSC opener on
