SBCC takes on East L.A. in home opener

SBCC will make its home football debut on Saturday at 1 p.m. when East Los Angeles comes to La Playa Stadium for a nonconference game.

The Vaqueros (1-0) opened last Saturday with a stirring 15-14 come-from-behind win at No. 24 Hancock. Santa Barbara’s defense had a goal-line stand and forced two fumbles that led to the final two TDs.

Sophomore quarterback Jarred Evans rushed 22 times for 103 yards and his 8-yard pass to Tyler Higbee with 2:36 to play was the game-winner.

Linebacker Morgan Nevin had 15 tackles and recovered both fumbles in the second half. He was this week’s American Pacific Conference defensive Player of the Week. Defensive back Cameron Gamble added 10 tackles and a sack.

Santa Barbara is ranked No. 20 in Southern Cal. The Vaqueros will play three of their next four games at home.

East L.A. (0-1) lost a 59-34 shootout to L.A. Valley last week. Valley piled up 475 yards and five TD passes.

The Huskies lead the all-time series with SBCC 6-4, including a 28-27 win last year in Monterey Park.
