Providence wins first two matches with new nickname

Playing its first matches under a new nickname, the Providence Patriots girls volleyball team defeated St. Thomas More or Portola Valley and Pescadero in northern California over the weekend.

Formerly called the Lions, Providence defeated St. Thomas More in four sets, 18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18, and swept Pescadero 25-7, 25-8, 25-15.

Against St. Thomas More, setters Maddy and Cody Niessen “did a great job of distributing the ball,” said assistant coach Dale Colburn.

Katie Hodson led the attack at the net with nines Olivia Barroca had 18 digs and freshman Abby Oppenhuizen picked up 12.

Olivia Johnson ripped eight aces and Providence totaled 19 for the match against Pescadero. Ozie LeSage and Maddie Niessen had six and five kills, respectively.
