MSoc: Oxnard beats SBCC with a late goal

Oxnard scored early and late on Tuesday night to hand SBCC its first WSC men’s soccer loss by a 2-1 score.

The Vaqueros (2-3, 2-1) fell to 1-2 at home this season. Oxnard improves to 3-4 and 2-1.

Diego Ortega opened the scoring for the Condors in the sixth minute with a header from close range on a cross by Alex Garcia.
Sophomore midfielder Ellis Mavers entered the game for SBCC in the 30th minute and tied it 1-1 in the 36thminute. Chris Ekdahl’s shot was saved by the goalie and the ball bounced to Mavers, who whirled around and drilled a 22-yard shot for his second goal.

Fernando Puga broke the tie in the 80th minute on a 20-yard shot that beat goalie Juan Rodriguez in the lower left side.

“It was an entertaining game,” said coach John Sisterson. “Unfortunately, we made two errors and let a goal in late. Sometimes, you can’t come back from that.

“At the time of that goal, I thought we were putting a lot of pressure on them. We were creating chances and it could have gone either way. It’s early days in the conference and Oxnard has caught up with us.

“It’s where you end up, it’s not where you start.”
