In a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2, Division 1 top-ranked Mater Dei beat Harvard Westlake 9-6 to win the championship of the Santa Barbara Invitational boys water polo tournament on Saturday.
Mater Dei is the three-time defending CIF Division 1 champion and has won five straight CIF titles.
Defending Division 2 champion Agoura edged Cathedral Catholic of San Diego for third place, 7-5. Agoura lost 13-2 against Mater Dei and Cathedral Catholic fell 11-6 to Harvard Westlake in the semifinals.
Dos Pueblos defeated Loyola, 9-8, to take 11th place and Santa Barbara finished 15th with a 9-5 win over St. Francis.
Santa Barbara earlier lost to Acalanes 16-8. Tyler Heffernan had four goals and earned eight ejections, Adam Gross had three assists and Foster Campbell made seven saves in three periods. The Dons trailed only 9-7 in the third but were outscored 7-1 the rest of the way.
In the win over St. Francis, Heffernan had another solid game with three goals and four earned ejections. Chris Bartholomew and Chris Gaffney each scored two goals, Gross had a goal and three assists and Sawyer Rhodes had a team-high five steals and earned a pair of ejections.
Blake Parish scored in sudden death overtime to lift Dos Pueblos to a 9-8 win over Loyola in the 11th-place game. Parrish gave Loyola fits, drawing eight ejections, four of which led to goals. Jake Griffin led the Chargers with five goals and Parrish added three.
Earlier, DP lost to Dana Hills 13-7. Parrish scored three goals and four other players tallied one apiece.
Dos Pueblos finished 2-2 in the tournament and is 2-5 on the season.
