Scarvelis takes Gold at Pan American Games

Stamatia Scarvelis capped her remarkable 2013 season with a gold medal effort in the shotput at the Pan American Juniors Games in Medellin, Colombia on Friday.

The Goleta product was competing for the USA Junior team against the top junior athletes 16 – 19 years of age from North and South America.

Scarvelis’ ?gold-medal winning distance was 50 feet and 8.5 inches. American Chase Ealy placed third in the same event. Brazil’s Isabella?Rodriguez da Silva edged Ealy for second place by 0.02 meters.

The high school senior won a national championship in Iowa this summer to qualify for the Pan American Games. That wasn’t long after Scarvelis wrapped up her second-straight CIF State Championship. The Pan American gold is her first international title.

Scarvelis’ gold was one of four won by the Americans on Friday night. The National Scholastic Athletics Association has more photos from last night posted on Facebook, including several more of Scarvelis and her teammates.
