Photo Journalism Internship Program

OBJECTIVES

This twelve-week program will train students many of the skills needed to be a professional news photographer.

The intern will graduate with a completion certificate, published works, a padded portfolio, more experience, with more contacts, and with an added skill-set invaluable to future success in the professional workforce. In addition, after completing the 12-week internship program, the photographer will be entered into a freelancer pool eligible for paid assignments with Presidio Sports.

Interns must be living in the Santa Barbara or Goleta area and have access to their own equipment.

12-WEEK PROGRAM SCHEDULE:

Week 1 – Shadow Presidio Sports photographer at live event. See first-hand how we collect our sports photos and how to conduct yourself at an event.

Week 2 – Shadow Presidio Sports photographer at live event. See first-hand how we collect our sports photos and how to conduct yourself at an event.

Week 3 –  In office. Intern learns how to properly crop sports photos for submission. Develop a sense of what to look for in a great sports action photo.

Week 4 – The Photo Gallery. Photograph an event and use 10 images to tell a story.

Week 5 – Working on Deadline. Cover a live event and produce three exciting photos to be published with news article on the same day.

Week 7 –  Indoors fast-motion, low-light assignment. Cover sporting event indoors, either basketball, wrestling or volleyball.

Week 8 – Distribution/Marketing. Photos are meant to be seen. Learn how to get your work noticed using social media.

Week 9 – Identify final project. Subject matter, complimentary media, audience, distribution plan. Final Project will be photo essay that sheds light on a sports-related subject. Begin image gathering for final project

Week 10 – Image gathering for final project

Week 11 –  Put final touches on project, including layout and written copy on website.

Week 12 – Publish final project, distribute, promote!!!
