Prep football teams kick off season on Aug. 30

All five local high schools will open their football seasons on Friday, Aug. 30, with four of them playing on the road.

Bishop Diego is the lone team with a home game on opening night. The Cardinals, who won their first 12 games last season en route to a Tri-Valley League championship and a CIF semifinal berth, kick off 2013 against Santa Maria at SBCC’s La Playa Stadium.

Santa Barbara travels to face a tough St. Joseph team and its outstanding senior quarterback, 6-3, 225-pound Curry Parham; San Marcos, looking to turn things around after a 1-9 season, opens at Cabrillo in Lompoc; Dos Pueblos heads into the Santa Ynez Valley to take on Santa Ynez and Carpinteria and its talented three-year starting quarterback Ian Craddock, crosses the county line to open at Templeton.

Here is a look a some of the more interesting match-ups on everyone’s schedule:

Bishop Diego: The Cardinals face three long road trips, a Sept. 13 game against Northwest Division team Pasadena-LaSalle, which went 10-1 last year, Sept. 27 at Inglewood and an intersectional battle at San Diego Section small schools power Santa Fe Christian in Solana Beach on Saturday, Oct. 5. They open TVL play against rival Carpinteria at SBCC on Saturday, Oct. 12 and close out league play at defending CIF champion Nordhoff on Nov. 1.

Carpinteria: After playing their first two games on the road at Templeton and South Torrance, the Warriors play their next three at home against Nipomo on Sept. 13, Santa Ynez on Sept. 20 and Santa Clara on Sept. 27. They take another long trip for a non-league game at St. Monica before finishing up with four TVL contests.

Dos Pueblos: The Chargers play San Luis Obispo in their home opener on Sept 6. On Sept. 20, the go to coach Nate Mendoza’s alma mater, Lompoc. They get a return game against San Juan Hills of San Juan Capistrano on Oct. 4 before kicking off Channel League at Santa Barbara on Oct. 11. The following Friday they face Goleta Valley rival San Marcos.

San Marcos: After opening the season on the road, the Royals will be home for the next three Friday nights, playing Beverly Hills, Hueneme and Channel Islands. They travel to defending CIF champion Nordhoff before opening Channel League play at home against Ventura. They’ll host the Big Game against Santa Barbara on Nov. 1.

Santa Barbara: For their home opener, the Dons play Beverly Hills in a rare Saturday afternoon game on Sept. 7. A sold-out Friday night concert at the Santa Barbara County Bowl and the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah are the reasons for the unusual scheduling. The Dons make a long trip to Bakersfield to play Centennial on Sept. 27 and open Channel League play at home against Dos Pueblos. The Dons won at DP in the league finale last season to earn a share of the title.
