Brown-Rottman earn “AA” ratings at East Beach

Two former high school stars who play volleyball for Division 1 programs won the Santa Barbara Women’s “A” doubles tournament on Saturday at East Beach.

Sammie Brown and Emily Rottman defeated Kelly Vieira and Carley Todd of Saugus to win the title and earn a California Beach Volleyball Association “AA” rating. Brown, a graduate of Dos Pueblos, is entering her senior season at Notre Dame. Rottman, a Santa Barbara High alum, is a senior at Virginia, where she’ll be the team’s co-captain this fall.

The team of Shannon Cotton-Kourey Cotton of Aptos and Lisa Reed (Santa Barbara) and Robin Terry (Carpinteria) shared third place in the tournament.

In the Santa Barbara Men’s “A”, SBHS boys volleyball coach Chad Arneson and partner Mark Foreman took top honors, beating John Shi (Ventura) and Ben Carney (Sherman Oaks) in the final.

Because there weren’t a minimum of eight “A” rated players in the field, Arneson and Foreman earned “A” ratings for winning the tournament. Tournament director Eric Arneson said the CBVA is reviewing the ruling.

Finishing third were Brendan McCay-Luca Forschini of Santa Barbara and Morgan Youngs-Julian Lopez of Carpinteria.
