Santa Barbara’s Joy Moats crosses the finish line in Bull Canyon with a record-breaking time on the 10k course.

Joy Moats of Santa Barbara, finished 1st place among females at the Santa Maria Bull Canyon 10K race in 35:35 last Saturday, breaking the previous mark set by Jennifer Derego in 2004 by over two minutes. The previous course record was 37:36. 422 runners ran the 15th annual Bull Canyon Run 10K which raises money for the Special Olympics.

John Lofthus, of Buellton won the men?s race in 33:57. Omar Padilla of Santa Barbara finished 2nd place in 35:07.

Moats, who set a personal best for the 10K, ran well despite the challenging course. The 10K run is a hilly out and back course starting at the Edwards Community Center in Santa Maria and heads north on Panther to Bull Canyon Road and back.
