GLF: Ward steps up to 4th at State Championships



SBCC sophomore Dodge Ward turned in rounds of 71 and 70 on Monday to capture fourth place in the State Men’s Golf Championships at Rancho Canada Golf Club in Carmel.

Ward, a former San Marcos High standout, made first-team All-State. He had the second-best score in the afternoon with a 1-under 70 on the 6,357-yard West course. Ward collected nine birdies in 36 holes.

Medalist Jacob Ruffino of Reedley fired a 4-under 67 in the morning round on the shorter East course and finished at 5-under 137.

Charlie Holyoke, who finished third in the Southern Cal Regional for the Vaqueros, shot 72-74–146 to take 11th place. Steven Lam was 22nd after rounds of 71 and 79 gave him a 150 total.

“The wind beat up on everyone in the second round,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “It was a great day for Dodge.”

Canyons, the WSC champion, shot 1-over 356 and closed with a 367 to beat Orange Coast by three shots for the team title (723-726).
