Gaucho baseball ends 12-year postseason drought

UCSB’s baseball team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament on Monday morning and will be competing in its first Regional since 2001 starting this Friday.

The Gauchos will open against Texas A&M on Friday at noon. Oregon State and UT San Antonio fill out the four-team regional hosted by OSU in Corvallis, Oregon.

“We’re really excited to get the opportunity to participate in the regionals,” said head coach Andrew Checketts. “We’re grateful to the selection committee for recognizing how well we have played over the last two months, and now we’ll prepare and get ready to play the best baseball that we can.”

Friday’s opener can be heard locally on AM 1290 or through UCSBGauchos.com.

UCSB enters the postseason on the heels of a three-game sweep of UC Davis, which brought them to a season-high 11 games over .500 at 34-23. The Gauchos’ 17-10 conference record was their best since 2001, the last time UCSB reached the postseason.

The Gauchos have a 6-17 all-time record in NCAA tournament play.

Big West Conference champion Cal State Fullerton is a Regional top seed. Cal Poly, who tied with UCSB for second in conference play, also qualified.
