Samantha Murphy and Kacey Creek recorded hat tricks, and UCSB sent its seniors out on a winning note
with an 8-5 upset of sixth-ranked San Diego State in a Big West women’s water polo match on Saturday at Campus Pool.
The win gives the Gauchos a 2-2 record in conference, while San Diego State falls to 4-2.
It was the last home match for seniors Creek, Shelby Haroldson, Ruth Milne and Rachel Nelson. Creek scored back-to-back goals to give the Gauchos a 3-1 led in the first period.
The Aztecs came out fast in the second period as Alex Ford tied the match on a 6:37 score. Despite the early pressure from San Diego State, UCSB opened up a 5-3 lead at the half with goals from Murphy and Haroldson.
The third period was the turning point as the Gauchos played a great all around game. Murphy and Creek obtained their third goals as they helped UCSB to an 8-4 lead.
UCSB improves to 19-10 on the season while San Diego State is 20-9.
