SWM: Royals relay team breaks 30-year record

San Marcos’ girls swimming team took another step forward on Friday by beating Buena to finish third in the Channel League dual meet season.

In the processs, the Royals’ girls medley relay team broke a school record that had stood since 1979. The team consists of Grace Pizzinat, Kate Coski, Dasha Depew and Olivia Smith. The group improved their time by over three seconds on Friday to set the new mark of 1:53.88.

Smith, a freshman, also bettered her own school record in the 100 butterfly and nearly broke another school record in the 50 free. Smith’s time of 24.67 was less than .30 off another school record set in 1979 held by Anne Tweedy.

San Marcos’ Spencer Kemp, Simone Andreetto and George Kuesis won races for the Royals’ boys. The Bulldogs captured the team win 96-74.

Another victory for the Royals came in the medley relay, as Chase McFadden joined Andreetto, Kuesis and Kemp.

Andreetto’s individual win came in the 200 IM. Kuesis won the 200 free and Kemp the 100 breaststroke.

Up next for the Royals is the Channel League Championships next week. The diving competition takes place on Monday, followed by prelims for girls on Tuesday and boys on Wednesday. League finals are Thursday at Dos Pueblos.
