SFT: SBCC’s Abbott is too tough on Oxnard

Alex Abbott threw a five-hitter with eight strikeouts on Tuesday and SBCC’s offense came alive late in an 8-1 WSC Gold softball victory at Oxnard.

Alice Cen went 2-3 and drove in two runs for the Vaqueros (14-23, 9-7), who broke open a 2-1 game with three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Oxnard fell to 2-27 and 1-14.

Abbott struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter. Danielle deCastro was 2-2 with an RBI.

The Vaqueros took a 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI double by Amanda Caras and a run-scoring double by deCastro to left-center field. The visitors extended the lead to 5-1 in the sixth on a two-out, two-run single by Cen and an RBI double by Dakotah Wilcox.

“Alex was in control and our defense played well,” said coach Paula Congleton. “We were very steady today.”

SBCC completes its season on Thursday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Moorpark.
