SFT: Moorpark takes two from Vaqueros

SBCC’s Alex Abbott held Moorpark to six hits in the first game on Thursday but the Raiders escaped with a 2-1 win and went on to sweep a WSC Gold softball doubleheader against the visiting Vaqueros.

Moorpark (23-12, 13-4) took the second game 11-3 in five innings. The Vaqueros finish the year with records of 14-25 and 9-9.

Trailing 2-0 in the opener, shortstop Alice Cen delivered a two-out RBI double in the top of the seventh to make it 2-1. SBCC had runners on first and third and Abbott hit a line drive to the right side but the second baseman made a leaping grab to end the game.

Santa Barbara took a 3-0 lead in the nightcap with a three-run third, highlighted by a two-run triple by Victoria Lucido. Moorpark tied it on a three-run homer by Heaven Silveira in the bottom of the third and pulled away by scoring four in the fourth.

The Vaqueros committed three errors, allowing the Raiders to tally four more runs in the fifth.

“That was kind of a tough way to end a little bit of a rough season,” said coach Paula Congleton. “Our freshmen understand what it takes to win in college ball now. We’ve got some good redshirts coming back next year and we’ll add some recruits who will help us improve.”
