GLF: One-stroke victory nets Dons league championship

Santa Barbara High’s boys golf team was merely one-stroke better than Dos Pueblos on Thursday, taking a 390-391 Channel League victory in both teams’ final dual match of the season.

Santa Barbara escapes with a share of the league championship, as both the Dons and Ventura finish with a 7-1 record. It is the seventh straight Channel League title for the Dons.

James Morton’s even-par 71 was the best individual round of the day. Brandon Crane (72) and Fabio Rodriguez (77) also broke 80 for the Dons, who were playing without senior Jonathan Collins, at DP’s Glen Annie Golf Course.

“I am so proud of this team as a whole as different guys have stepped up lately in a big way,” reported Dons head coach James Bedard. “Fabio played great today, shooting 2 over par 38 on the back and that really propelled us. I am so happy for the whole team and they are excited to have survived through a tough league schedule this year. This is a great time to be playing well as we get ready for the playoffs and need to be firing on all cylinders.”

Michael Nam’s 73 led Dos Pueblos, which featured five scores 82 or lower.

Both teams will be at the Channel League Individual Tournament on Monday and Tuesday at Soule Park in Ojai.
