TRK: San Marcos boys, DP girls win at crosstown meet

Double wins by Addi Zerrenner, Stamatia Scarvelis and Cerina Bhavnani paced the Dos Pueblos girls to a win over San Marcos in a crosstown Channel League track and field meet on Thursday at Warkentin Stadium.

In the boys meet, San Marcos got double wins from sprinter Garrett Paulsen to help the Royals beat the Chargers.

Paulsen won the 100 in 11.72 and the 200 in 23.51. He also ran the second leg in the Royals? winning 4×100 relay team. Kyle Tran, Paulsen, Jesus Munoz and Colin Sininger clocked in at 44.79.

With state cross country champion Bryan Fernandez of DP electing to run the 800, Ryan Sorensen of San Marcos took full advantage in the 3200 and won in 9:44.70. Teammate Nicholas Swider placed second (10:04.67).

Cole Smith and Andrew McGuan went 1-2 for the Chargers in the 1600 in 4:35.43 and 4:36.56, respectively.

Fernandez (2:01.72) held of San Marcos? Ian Hall (2:04.06) to win the 800.

The Chargers won the 4×400 relay (3:32.20) with the team of Nicolas Cordeniz, John Greening, Samuel Seibel and John Linehan.

DP scored well in the field events. Philip Spadoro and Joshua Fry tied for first in the high jump at 5-8, Tate Cutcliffe won the pole vault (14-0) and John Linehan took the long jump (20-7.25).

After taking second in the long jump, Joe Prince of San Marcos won the triple jump in 38-9. Teammate Alex Das was an inch behind in second.

San Marcos swept the discus, Michael Orosco-Moore won the event at 144-05 followed by Josh Hoeflich (129-10.25) and Reggie Groover (124-5).

Zerrenner won the distance-double for the DP girls, taking the 1600 in 5:21.47 and the 3200 in 12:16.17. Kaitlyn Kuehn gave Zerrenner a good race in the 1600 and finished in second in 5:24.07.

The closest race of the day was in the girls 100 hurdles, where Aanavi Karandikar of San Marcos edged Rachel Fry of DP by one-hundreth of a second: 17.88 to 17.89.

In another close finish, Jill Fisher of San Marcos won the 100 in 13.22, edging DP?s Emma Redick (13.31). Redick came back to beat Fisher in the 200 (26.60 to 27.06).

In field events, Cerina Bhavnani of DP beat Caroline Vance of San Marcos by two inches in the long jump: 16-4 to 16-2. Bhavnani also tied Charlotte Garratt of San Marcos for first in the high jump at 4-10.

Niema Poindexter had a good triple jump with a winning mark of 35-4.

Scarvelis, the defending state shot put champion, threw 47-11 in the shot put and 154-0 in the discus.
