TEN: Gaucho women roll past Portland

UC Santa Barbara won the doubles point and then claimed five of the six singles matches en route to a 6-1 win over visiting Portland University on Saturday afternoon.

The Gauchos (12-6) posted wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to get off to a quick start. At No. 1, Paola Cos and Priscilla Garcia topped Anastasia Polyakova and Sabine Fuchs, 8-6, while at No. 2 it was Kiersten Meehan and April Scatliffe recording an 8-4 win over Valeska Hoath and Tori Troesch.

In singles, UCSB won No. 2 through No. 6. Two of the wins, by Stacy Yam and No. 5 and Erica Cano at No. 6, were 2-0 sweeps, but the other three were three-set victories.

“I was really happy with the way we fought today,” said Gaucho head coach Simon Thibodeau. “We had many close matches and somehow found a way to win.”

Meehan battled to a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win over Polyakova at the No. 2 slot. At No. 3, Cos needed three sets to defeate Fuchs, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. Garcia also went three for the win at No. 4, defeating Hoath, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6. Yam’s sweep over Tori Troesch at No. 5 came by a score of 6-3, 7-6, while Cano’s win over Saroop Dhatt was by a 6-1, 6-4 score.

UCSB returns to the court on Saturday, April 6 when it plays its final home match of the season, hosting Cal Poly at noon.
