SFT: Hancock shuts down SBCC

Nathalia Powell pitched a five-hitter and hit a two-run homer on Tuesday, leading Hancock to a 7-0 WSC Gold softball victory over SBCC at Pershing Park.

The Vaqueros (5-11, 2-1) were held to two hits in the first five innings. The Bulldogs scored four times in the fifth to stretch the lead to 7-0.

Leadoff hitter Michaela Valencia went 4-4 for Hancock with two doubles and three runs.

SBCC pitcher Victoria Lucido was 2-4 at the plate, boosting her team-high average to .424.

“Our timing was off a little, our kids were a little jumpy in the box,” said coach Paula Congleton. “We hit a lot of balls hard in foul territory but only got five hits. And we had a lot of fly-ball outs.

“You’re not going to win games that way. We have to get better offensive production.”
The Vaqueros loaded the bases in the second and sixth innings with two outs but couldn’t score.

“We showed a lack of focus and our confidence isn’t there right now,” Congleton added. “Mentally, the kids feel like they’re in a slump and they’re not. We have to find a way to dig out of that hole.”

The Vaqueros travel to Cuesta for a doubleheader on Thursday at 1 p.m.
