GLF: Scher takes UCSB to team title

ELK GROVE – Senior Glen Scher shot an 8-under par 208 to win the Sacramento State Invitational and lead UC Santa Barbara to the team championship at the 14-school event held at the Valley Hi Country Club in Elk Grove.

As a team, the Gauchos shot a season-best 10-under par 854 to defeat Cal State Fullerton by seven shots. They recorded a 6-under par 282 in the first round and they equaled that score in the decisive final round.

“This is the most resilient team I’ve ever coached,” said UCSB head coach Steve Lass. “They go through bad stretches that don’t seem to faze them and their good stretches are contagious.”

Scher’s performance must have been contagious to at least a couple of his teammates. Marshall Colby carded a 4-under par 68 in the final round to finish with a 5-under par 211, good for fourth-place, and Jordan Epstein shot a final round 69 to finish with a 2-under par 214, tying for seventh.

Brett Silvernail (5-over par 221) and Hunter Robinson (12-over par 228) finished tied for 30th and tied for 54th respectively.

Scher’s win came by one shot over Adam Goins of USC Upstate who scored a 7-under par 209.

The Gauchos return to action at the Anteater Classic on Mar. 25-26. The Tournament will be played at the El Niguel Country Club in Laguna Beach.
