BVB: Royals able to down Valencia

San Marcos’s boys volleyball team swept 25-20, 25-19, 26-24 Valencia on Wednesday night, beating the Vikings for the first time in over five years.

“We played with a tremendous amount of heart and energy at the end,” said Royals head coach Roger Kuntz, whose team came back from a 23-18 deficit in the third game to secure the sweep.

Kuntz said his team was excellent in serve-receive and that the pace on offense was the fastest he’s seen this season.

Setter Christian Widmer distributed the ball to a variety of hitters, including Shane Hauschild with 14 kills. New starting middle Max Wilson tallied five kills and five blocks.

“(Widmer) really spread the ball around to all of our offense really effectively,” Kuntz said.

San Marcos is now 7-3 on the season. Before the week is out, the Royals face San Luis Obispo on Thursday and compete in the Dos Pueblos Invitational on Saturday.
