Weekend Calendar: Dons to honor Chavez at season opener

Santa Barbara High?s baseball team will honor Simon Chavez before its 2013 season opener on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at Eddie Mathews Field.

Chavez, who played for the Dons and stayed in the baseball program after graduation as a coach for the freshman and junior varsity club teams and the regular season JV squad, died from injuries suffered in a hit-and-run accident on Hwy. 101 on Jan. 15. He was 22 years old.

?He was a really good kid,? Santa Barbara coach Fred Warrecker said.

Simon?s parents, Ana and Luis, will throw out the first pitch prior to the Dons? game against Pioneer Valley.

Girls Basketball: CIF Semifinals ? Santa Barbara High and Providence Hall hope to be playing in their division final four.

Celebration: Santa Barbara Foresters 2012 National Championship – Join Santa Barbara’s champion semi-pro baseball team as they host a celebration fundraiser at Chuck’s Waterfront Grill. ?The event will raise funds to support Hugs for Cubs, the Foresters? program to help children and families struggling with cancer. Local breweries, including Firestone Walker, Telegraph, Island, Figueroa Mountain, and Surf, will offer selections of their finest beer; Chuck?s Waterfront Grill will provide tasty bites to pair with the beer.

SUNDAY

Running: Roses en la Playa 5k, Leadbetter Beach, 9 a.m.?? This is an out-and-back Santa Barbara Athletic Association Grand Prix race at the beach. Post-race activities at Leadbetter Beach.

College Baseball:??UCLA at UCSB, 2 p.m. ? The Gauchos play the No. 6 Bruins at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for last week but was postponed due to rain. UCLA has won two-straight Pac-12 titles.
