Carpinteria hung with a fast and experienced La Quinta before falling 12-8 in the first round of the CIF Division 4 playoffs on Thursday at home.
“La Quinta is a large school of 3,000-plus students, we just did not have enough horses today,” Carpinteria coach Bryan Swarm said. “It’s always tough going out in the first round, but we had a great season with our second league championship in as many years. We also cracked the top-10 in the CIF polls for the first time in school history.”
The Warriors were down by one goal (4-3) after the first period. La Quinta capitalized on some mistakes in the second quarter and built a 7-4 lead.
Carpinteria held La Quinta to one goal in the third period and found some offense early in the fourth period. The Warriors closed the deficit to 8-6, but La Quinta regrouped and built its lead back to four goals.
Ella Sherman and Hunter Oliver each scored five goals to lead La Quinta.
Hope Grant scored three goals and Maddie Brooks and Leticia Cruz each tallied two goals for Carpinteria. Vanessa Vega made 10 saves.
Carpinteria finishes the year with 16-10 record
