GSoc: Cate survives shootout in the first round

Cate goalkeeper Eliza Giles made two saves in a penalty-kick shootout, helping the Rams defeat NuView Bridge 3-1 in a first-round girls soccer playoff match in CIF Division 7 on Thursday. The teams played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtime periods

Ellen Lempres, Fernanda Pett, and Mabel Sabina converted for Cate in the shootout. Giles stopped two of the first three New Bridge penalty kicks. After fourth shooter sent her kick off the cross bar, the Cate players piled on Giles “in a frenzy of blue that made the whole trip, the whole season really, worth all the time,” said coach Lisa Holmes.

NuView Bridge took a 1-0 lead in the first half

The Rams equalized in the 62nd minute on a 25-yard free kick by Lempres.

“The direct kick that was so perfectly placed the NuView Bridge keeper could really only admire the arc of the ball as it went into the net,” said Holmes.

Giles made several clutch saves to keep the score deadlocked.

“This was a full team effort with all 17 healthy players contributing to the win. The girls practically floated off the field,” said Holmes.
