GSAC honors Canitez’s monster week

For the second time this season, Westmont senior forward Tugce Canitez has been named the NAIA and Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Canitez helped lead #8 Westmont (17-3, 8-0 GSAC) to conference wins last week over Concordia and San Diego Christian.

Against Concordia, Canitez tallied 24 points and 16 rebounds in just 18 minutes of play. Against San Diego Christian, the native of Izmir, Turkey recorded 36 points, 13 rebounds and three assists.

On the week, Canitez shot .778 from the field (21 of 27), which included going three of five from three-point range. From the free throw line she was 15 of 18 (.833).

Last season, Canitez was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NAIA Player of the Year and was honored as a first team NAIA All-American.

Canitez, who transferred to Westmont after her sophomore year at Northern Idaho Community College, has scored 1,080 points in 55 games wearing a Westmont uniform. She currently ranks at number 10 in the Warrior’s career scoring list.

Westmont will be in action tonight (Tuesday) against #3 Vanguard (16-1, 7-1) in a battle for first place in the GSAC standings. First pitch is at 5:30 p.m.
