GBK: Bishop Diego gets long awaited girls basketball title

Thursday’s Frontier League win was more than just a win for Bishop Diego as the Cardinals finished off their first league title since 1984 with a 53-35 victory over Fillmore.

The Cardinals finish with an 11-1 record in league play and enter the playoffs as the seventh-ranked team in Division 5AA. Brackets will be released on Sunday.

The Cardinals honored six players on Senior Night: Michelle Garcia, Madison Balard-Rozok, Charlie Fling, Greer Shull, Josie McCoy and Daisy Poindexter.

Shull recorded 20 points and six assists. Sophomore Jordyn Lilly added nine points and Colleen Duly had eight. Poindexter pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Bishop Diego led 31-10 at halftime against Fillmore. The Cardinals scored 20 points in the first quarter, with Shull and McCoy accounting for 18 of them.
